Key Text: 2 Chronicles 26:15, 14

He made skillfully designed ENGINES in Jerusalem to shoot arrows and catapult large stones for use on the towers and on the corners. So his fame spread even to distant places, for he was marvelously helped until he became strong.

One of the distinguishing factors between successful people and the “not-so-successful” people is in the power of innovations. The major leading companies in our world today have achieved major feats through innovations. Companies such as Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Apple and the likes came into the lime light via innovations and have been able to sustain themselves only by constantly bringing on board new inventions.

This trend did not just start in the last century; it’s well dated back to the scripture times; one of which is recorded in the story of Uzziah who became king at age sixteen (16) and then began to make engines of war. These engines were superior to what previously existed. The Israelite armies needed not to fight at close proximity with their enemies like they did before with swords and arrows, but from a very far distance and at a fast pace they can shoot thousands of arrows and hurl huge rocks at their enemies. THROW YOURSELF “ALL IN”

Key Text: Act 5:1-2

Now a man named Ananias, together with his wife Sapphira, also sold a piece of property. With his wife’s full knowledge HE KEPT BACK PART of the money for himself, but brought the rest and put it at the apostles’ feet.

One of the major reasons many have failed to achieve the level of success that they so earnestly desire is because they do not give everything they’ve got to their life pursuits. Many success stories have been truncated because majority have held back from total commitment and have kept “a bit of themselves” back for themselves.

Ananias and Saphira died in the presence of the early church because they decided to keep back for themselves part of what they were supposed to bring into the common purse, while expecting equal distribution of resources from that same purse.

Many believe that they are entitled to the same level of success that others are achieving in their industry but they aren’t putting everything that the successful people are putting in. The little boy that gave his lunch for the feeding of the 5,000 could have kept back for himself one or two loaves of bread, but rather he “threw himself all in”; and for sure the little lad went home with way more than he gave. Earn the right for “Recommendations”.

Key Text: For I have endued Bazalel with wisdom in every form of crafts

It’s the desire of many to be called upon when people or organizations need a skill and expertise that you possess or a product or service that your organization render. Life even gets a lot easier when we get the job or the business deals by recommendation rather than staying in line waiting and lobbying to be considered.

Bazalel enjoyed God’s recommendation. He must have been one of the best in Egypt in the works of silver and of Gold. Even though the text made it clear that God endued him with wisdom, it would have taken Bazalel hard work, impeccable character and dedication to have earned God’s recommendation and trust when it came to the sanctuary project. The same way God blessed Bazalel with wisdom and certain unique gifts, he has also blessed each and every one of us with one gift or the other. Continue reading

Whose Business Are You Minding?

Key Text: Luke 2:49

And he said unto them, How is it that you sought me? knew you not that I must be about my Father’s business?

Success requires clarity of what your assignment or business is, and getting fully involved doing exactly that. Many of us get this twisted and get so busy doing other things other than “OUR BUSINESS”. We spend years away from our core assignments and then struggle to find our way back after we’ve spent our most vital energy on what is inconsequential to our core. If you’ve ever been lost while travelling, you can tell that it takes more time getting back on track than it took missing the way in the first place.

Jesus’ parents were caught up with the crowd; chatting away their lives, so much so that they forgot the messiah, whose care was supposedly their core assignment. It took them three days to locate him back, after they discovered “THEY” were missing- (They were the ones missing; not Jesus). Jesus said clearly “Don’t you know I must be about my father’s business?” Continue reading

DON’T BE DISTRACTED

Key Text: Ephesians 4:14

Then we will no longer be immature like children. We won’t be tossed and blown about by every wind of new teaching. We will not be influenced when people try to trick us with lies so clever they sound like the truth.

People have lost their lives while driving and texting (or calling), not because they do not know how to drive, but because their mind was distracted from their path. Likewise, many individuals and businesses have experienced major setbacks in their enterprises not because of any major obstacle or turbulence along their path, but by subtle distractions that has kept their focus away from their main agenda.

Rather than focus on our “MAIN” objectives, we allow too many activities to take over our time. We sweat the small stuffs, we listen to too many people including those who have no experience whatsoever in our business and personal dealings, we refuse to delegate by becoming obsessively busy and thinking that being “busy” is being productive. What’s Your “ONE THING”?

“One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to inquire in his temple.”

New entrepreneurs face a lot of pressures and are usually in a haste to quickly succeed. And so, one of their greatest temptations is to get their hands into tons of businesses, projects and activities; spreading themselves too thin and splitting their limited resources (time, money, emotions) amongst so many engagements all at the same time.

Unfortunately, many of us have failed to achieve excellence not because we do not have the ability and/or resource that will enable us do so, but because we are caught up in the web of “Seeking too many things” all at the same time. Continue reading

Seal The Deal- PROPERLY!

Key Text: Ruth 4:7-8

Now this was the custom in former times in Israel concerning the redemption and the exchange of land to confirm any matter: a man removed his sandal and gave it to another; and this was the manner of attestation in Israel. So the closest relative said to Boaz, “Buy it for yourself.” And he removed his sandal.

Whether you run a business out of your garage or a magnificent building, using written agreements is critical to protecting yourself and to avoid unnecessary wars. Research has proven that just “The Handshake” without any form of documented expectations in terms of an agreement is usually not enough.

Great relationships are often ruined due to misunderstood expectations. Many young business owners deal with a gentle man’s agreement so as to get the deal going quickly, but when the rubber hits the road and their expectations become unmet, they get very confused as to how to deal with the situation. Emotions, time and already limited finances get spent out in the bid to clarify expectations which could have been straightened out at the commencement of the relationship. Continue reading

Or suppose a king is about to go to war against another king. Won’t he first sit down and consider whether he is able with ten thousand men to oppose the one coming against him with twenty thousand? If he is not able, he will send a delegation while the other is still a long way off and will ask for terms of peace.

Whether you are trying to get a good discount, trying to get a salary raise, maybe trying to get the lunch time you want, or convincing your significant other to go to a party with you; we all negotiate all day long. We may not like to do it, but we have to do it anyway.  Negotiation is a skill that you must learn to survive in business and get the best out of your personal life. Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.

One of the rules of success in life is to submit your decisions to the scrutiny and review of “WISE COUNSELORS”.  It is only in very rare cases that you find yourself doing something that has never been done before or charting a course for which no one has ever attempted.

Building a team also requires building your network of mentors. A lot of disappointments and heartaches will be avoided if you get the right people to take you by the hand or point you in the right direction. Mentorship is now the single-biggest catalyst in the growth of many successful enterprises; take advantage of it. Continue reading

Who’s on Board? -Team Building 1

Key Text: Ecclesiastes 4:12

Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.

There are probably very few more important characteristics of business success than that of building an effective and dependable team. One of the cheapest and most dangerous mindset of new business owners is that of thinking they can do it by themselves.

In a concert, it will be very difficult for only a drum to make great melody, but when combined with other instruments in an organized tune, there would be a symphony. Working all by yourself, will be stressful and very lonely if you do not allow anyone else to offer you help.

God said in Genesis 2:18” “It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him.” He understands that we cannot really do anything much in isolation. He knows that wonderful things happen when people of complementary characteristics get together. Continue reading
