He made skillfully designed ENGINES in Jerusalem to shoot arrows and catapult large stones for use on the towers and on the corners. So his fame spread even to distant places, for he was marvelously helped until he became strong.
One of the distinguishing factors between successful people and the “not-so-successful” people is in the power of innovations. The major leading companies in our world today have achieved major feats through innovations. Companies such as Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Apple and the likes came into the lime light via innovations and have been able to sustain themselves only by constantly bringing on board new inventions.
This trend did not just start in the last century; it’s well dated back to the scripture times; one of which is recorded in the story of Uzziah who became king at age sixteen (16) and then began to make engines of war. These engines were superior to what previously existed. The Israelite armies needed not to fight at close proximity with their enemies like they did before with swords and arrows, but from a very far distance and at a fast pace they can shoot thousands of arrows and hurl huge rocks at their enemies. Now a man named Ananias, together with his wife Sapphira, also sold a piece of property. With his wife’s full knowledge HE KEPT BACK PART of the money for himself, but brought the rest and put it at the apostles’ feet.
One of the major reasons many have failed to achieve the level of success that they so earnestly desire is because they do not give everything they’ve got to their life pursuits. Many success stories have been truncated because majority have held back from total commitment and have kept “a bit of themselves” back for themselves.
Ananias and Saphira died in the presence of the early church because they decided to keep back for themselves part of what they were supposed to bring into the common purse, while expecting equal distribution of resources from that same purse.
Many believe that they are entitled to the same level of success that others are achieving in their industry but they aren’t putting everything that the successful people are putting in. The little boy that gave his lunch for the feeding of the 5,000 could have kept back for himself one or two loaves of bread, but rather he “threw himself all in”; and for sure the little lad went home with way more than he gave. But Naaman was furious and went away and said, “Behold, I thought, ‘He will surely come out to me and stand and call on the name of the LORD his God, and wave his hand over the place and cure the leper.’
Many dreams have hit the rocks not because they weren’t fantastic dreams nor well thought out, but because many people already have a set mind and a non-flexible imagination on how they think their endeavors and businesses will succeed, and as such they have become unwilling to try out other peoples’ suggestions especially when it seems too ordinary.
Naaman was one of the greatest army general in Syria, whom by God’s hands had won many battles for his country: but he had Leprosy both on his body and in his attitude. Having received a suggestion to solving his pressing need, his imaginations as to the procedure of the solution almost blocked off his miracle. His idea of getting healed was totally different from Prophet Elisha’s instructions: they were too ordinary and demeaning to try. Continue reading

Life gets interesting when we start to make a little headway in our businesses and personal endeavors. We get a little comfortable and heave a sigh of relieve. Isn’t it interesting when we begin to enjoy the fruits of our labor? I bet it’s fun when the customers are rolling in and your bank account regularly gets credited.
However, research shows that a striking number of entrepreneurs (about 70%) lose their profits within the first year of making huge gains, and about 90% never come back up again. The sensation of being celebrated and being in the front-line of life is such a pleasant one; many desire such experience and relish the idea of standing on the podiums to receive trophies for great achievements. But often times those who make it to the front lines didn’t get there by sheer luck, they must have prepared, practiced, weathered the storm and developed tenacity in the face of adversities while sometimes doing seemingly non-consequential tasks.
Olympic Champions never win a medal by mere wish; it takes a lot of practice and putting in the hard work even when no one is watching. Likewise, Medical doctors don’t get there by merely wishing, they had to put in the gruesome years to train whether or not they are receiving praises. Continue reading

Now this was the custom in former times in Israel concerning the redemption and the exchange of land to confirm any matter: a man removed his sandal and gave it to another; and this was the manner of attestation in Israel. So the closest relative said to Boaz, “Buy it for yourself.” And he removed his sandal.
Whether you run a business out of your garage or a magnificent building, using written agreements is critical to protecting yourself and to avoid unnecessary wars. Research has proven that just “The Handshake” without any form of documented expectations in terms of an agreement is usually not enough.
Great relationships are often ruined due to misunderstood expectations. Many young business owners deal with a gentle man’s agreement so as to get the deal going quickly, but when the rubber hits the road and their expectations become unmet, they get very confused as to how to deal with the situation. Emotions, time and already limited finances get spent out in the bid to clarify expectations which could have been straightened out at the commencement of the relationship. Continue reading

Or suppose a king is about to go to war against another king. Won’t he first sit down and consider whether he is able with ten thousand men to oppose the one coming against him with twenty thousand? If he is not able, he will send a delegation while the other is still a long way off and will ask for terms of peace.
Whether you are trying to get a good discount, trying to get a salary raise, maybe trying to get the lunch time you want, or convincing your significant other to go to a party with you; we all negotiate all day long. We may not like to do it, but we have to do it anyway. Negotiation is a skill that you must learn to survive in business and get the best out of your personal life. Plan carefully and you will have plenty; if you act too quickly, you will never have enough.
Have you ever gone to the market without planning to buy something, but when you saw it, you loved it and you just bought it? The purchase was plainly emotional buying and it made you feel good; many of us are guilty of that. In fact many people visit the store sporadically and now use shopping as a therapy for feeling good. Anyone who has formed the habit of spending before thinking is headed for financial disaster.
One of the major reason businesses and individuals are stuck is because they do not have a clear cut budget. A budget is principally assigning responsibility for every dollar that comes into your hands. It’s telling your money where it should go. Solomon who was the wealthiest in his time gave this insight in the text above “…if you act too quickly, you will never have enough.” It’s very important to plan carefully! Continue reading

Simon Peter went up and dragged the net to land, full of large fish, ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY THREE; and although there were so many, the net was not broken.
One of the ways to know whether or not you are growing is to keep proper records of the resources that pass through your hands. Unfortunately, many people do not want to be bogged down with details and only few will take their time to keep proper accounts of the state of affairs of their business or their personal lives.
Jesus had a treasurer to keep records of resources, and the scripture talks about God keeping “Books” in heaven, even though He is All-Knowing. All these point to the inevitable importance of record keeping. Continue reading
