Don’t Take the Discouragement Pill

Key Text: Nehemiah 2:19

But when Sanballat the Horonite, Tobiah the Ammonite official and Geshem the Arab heard about it, they mocked and ridiculed us. “What is this you are doing?” they asked. “Are you rebelling against the king?”

One critical characteristic of successful professionals and entrepreneurs is the ability to deal with naysayers and critics. The moment you find yourself in the direction of progress, you will inevitably find critics and “discouragers” on the way. Trying to live without critics is a mere illusion if you must make it.

Samballat and Tobiah were set to frustrate all the efforts of Nehemiah. I suspect that their problem was, – “why would a cup bearer get the glory of taking on such a massive project of rebuilding the ruins of Jerusalem while they were there?”

Many people criticize and pass unwholesome comments on the feats you are taking, mostly as a result of their fears and insecurities. You will hear comments like; “you’re so young”, “did you even go to business school?” “You’re too intense”, “Can this thing ever survive?”, “Who’s going to buy that?”, “You will be gone in a jiffy”, “Competitors will throw you out”.

You will be shocked also that many people including friends really do not want you to succeed. It’s a blow on their face if you get successful in what you are trying to do and leave them behind.

  • Winston Churchill’s father said that Winston was “unfit for a career in law or politics.”- He later on became the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
  • Someone said to the Wright Brothers- “Flight by machines heavier than air is unpractical and insignificant, if not utterly impossible.” – They flew 18 months later.

2 Peter 3:17 NLT says “So be on guard; then you will not be carried away by the errors of these wicked people and lose your own secure footing.”

Have you ever been mocked on an idea that you were working on?  Been ridiculed on your new concepts, or scorned because of your faith? Don’t take it in; it’s part of the game.

Do not reduce the brightness of your light because it’s disturbing those who love to sit in darkness. Do not get distracted by the jealous Sambalats or the bitter Tobiahs. Be strong!

Prayer: Holy Spirit, Strengthen me daily as I focus on my primary assignment. Grant me wisdom to succeed in spite of negative criticisms and discouragements all around me.

You will succeed.
